Calgary is Our Classroom

The best way to learn about a career is to try it! At Fusion Collegiate, all of Calgary is our Classroom.  A great education includes a rich array of experiential learning opportunities.  Students will visit real-world settings and learn alongside industry experts as they explore and pursue their chosen ‘career pathway’. 

 Calgary is our Classroom experiences include:

University and College On-campus Series

  • – Take courses with our post-secondary partners, University of Calgary, SAIT, and Olds College 
  • – Shadow a post-secondary student for a day 
  • – Develop learning strategies from post-secondary instructors that fully prepare you for success in post-secondary studies
  • – Determine what you want to do and know what you need to do to achieve it


Workshop & Challenge Series

  • – Students participate in competitions; skill development workshops; and research.


Guest Speaker Series

  • – Students have the opportunities to learn from and with Calgary and international leaders and entrepreneurs in their field of interest.


Tour Series

  • – Experience your career choice right here in Calgary. 
  • – Tour industry settings in your pathway like: operating rooms, vet clinics, airports, corporate offices, trades shops, construction sites, small businesses 


Certifications and Micro-credentials

  • – This includes various certifications and credentials applicable to students’ pathways, for example – First Aid & CPR, Fall Arrest Training, etc. 

Students select courses that best match their personal interests or follow the recommended pathway courses.  

** All of our ‘Calgary is our Classroom’ experiences are integrated into the curriculum and schedule. Students will not ‘miss’ or have to ‘catch up’ on time spent in these enriched learning opportunities, they are integrated and support the curriculum outcomes, skill building and competency development.**

Grade 10 - Connect

Students will take foundational courses towards their high school diploma and participate in a rich array of ‘Calgary is our Classroom’ learning to make personal connections to their pathway. Students will explore the range of opportunities within their pathway through workplace visits, career interviews, and work-integrated learning opportunities. Students may also take their first post-secondary courses, earning credits towards their degree while learning about how to be successful in post-secondary learning through the support of their high school teachers and post-secondary instructors.

Grade 11 - Explore

Students will delve deeper into exploring their pathway of interest and will have the opportunity to gain work-integrated learning or internship experiences and credits. Students will participate in ‘Calgary is our Classroom’ learning as they explore their pathway and the vast opportunities within it. They will select courses that align with their goals including post-secondary credits or industry credentials. They will be supported to further develop their learning plan as they identify career and post-secondary possibilities.

Grade 12 - Advance & Focus

Students will advance and focus on their pathway of choice as they select courses and opportunities that align with their goals. Students will complete diploma requirements while being immersed in opportunities within their pathway. They will have the opportunity to engage in further post-secondary learning or focus on apprenticeship or workplace learning. Students will work with teachers to further develop their learning plan and ensure that they are prepared for their next steps.

Mind The Gap!

Some students need a gap year to further high school learning as they discover their passion while upgrading and earning post-secondary credits or industry credentials. Fusion Collegiate offers a range of flexible gap year programming that supports students to have a valuable and meaningful 4th year of high school. Gap-year programming has been developed in partnership with post-secondary and industry partners to help students make a plan and begin their successful transition. Students will complete their fourth year with increased confidence, preparedness, and readiness for their next step!

ALBERTA HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA: GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS (ENGLISH)
The requirements indicated in this chart are the minimum requirements for a student to attain an Alberta High School Diploma. The requirements for entry into post-secondary institutions and workplaces may require additional and/or specific courses.
100 CREDITS
including the following:
ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS – 30 LEVEL
(English Language Arts 30-1 or 30-2)
SOCIAL STUDIES – 30 LEVEL
(Social Studies 30-1 or 30-2)
MATHEMATICS – 20 LEVEL
(Mathematics 20-1, Mathematics 20-2 or Mathematics 20-3)
SCIENCE – 20 LEVEL
(Science 20, Science 24, Biology 20, Chemistry 20 or Physics 20)
PHYSICAL EDUCATION 10 (3 CREDITS)
CAREER AND LIFE MANAGEMENT (3 CREDITS)
10 CREDITS IN ANY COMBINATION FROM
· Career and Technology Studies (CTS) courses
· Fine Arts courses
· Second Languages courses
· Physical Education 20 and/or 30
· Knowledge and Employability courses
· Registered Apprenticeship Program courses

10 CREDITS IN ANY 30-LEVEL COURSE
(IN ADDITION TO A 30-LEVEL ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS AND A 30-LEVEL SOCIAL STUDIES COURSE AS SPECIFIED ABOVE)

These courses may include
· 30-level locally developed courses
· Advanced level (3000 series) in Career and Technology Studies courses
· 30-level Work Experience courses
· 30-level Knowledge and Employability courses
· 30-level Registered Apprenticeship Program courses
· 30-level Green Certificate Specialization courses
· Special Projects 30
The science requirement—Science 20 or 24, Biology 20, Chemistry 20 or Physics 20—may also be met with the 10-credit combination of Science 14 and Science 10.

4 – 30-level English language arts or 30-level social studies courses from a different course sequence may not be used to meet the 30-level course requirement.
5 – Students may earn a maximum of 30 credits in Work Experience, but only 15 credits may be used to meet the 100-credit requirement for the Alberta High School Diploma.

Courses that are identified using a post-secondary institution (PSI) course code may be used to meet the diploma requirements of “10 credits in any combination from Career and Technology Studies (CTS) courses” and “10 credits in any 30-level course – Advanced level (3000 series) in Career and Technology Studies courses.”

For 30-level courses that have a diploma examination, the final course mark consists of a blend of the school awarded mark (70%) and the diploma examination mark (30%).

Mature students should consult the Mature Students section for applicable requirements.

Only 5 high school credits for external learning may be used to meet the 100-credit requirement for the Alberta High School Diploma
